Gardiner McCauley is a painter who studied painting at University of California, Berkeley (BA, MA) and California College of Arts and Crafts. He taught for 20 years at Stephens College, Lewis & Clark College, UC Berkeley, and in England and France. He later went on to become executive director of Villa Montalvo Center for the Arts in Saratoga. Gardiner has exhibited in galleries in New York and Chicago, and museums in the San Francisco Bay Area.
